Reduced-price gluten-free pantry staples

Some of the most expensive things to buy are gluten free breads. Cakes, sandwich bread, bagels, rolls. All of these will cost double, if not quadruple what regular store-bought breads cost. Buying gluten free biscuits, pancakes, bagels, rolls, etc will suck up too much of your grocery budget.

Tip: When making quick bread recipes, all you have to do is replace regular flour with a gluten free flour blend. I do tend to take a minimalist approach to things, so I pair down my appliances to just a few that really make my life easier and are worth the investment and the space in my small kitchen.

Find a store that carries bulk gluten-free flours. I use a local Winco, but many Krogers also have a well-priced bulk section. My absolute favorite place to stock up on gluten free pantry foods including flours is Azure Standard.

They are high quality and you can pick up orders locally once a month. If not, you can become a site drop off location.

Just pull together a couple friends to create the order minimum. Get a couple friends to also request it, too. Be the change, man! Your dietary needs are not an inconvenience. They want to sell you stuff! Asking your grocery stores to carry gluten-free items so you can shop there benefits both of you.

Start a conversation. They may even be willing to order some items in especially for you. NOTE: I know that those of you who deal with legitimate celiac may not be able to purchase from a bulk section for safety reasons , but there are still ways to buy in bulk from other retailers that are cheaper than grocery stores.

When eating gluten free on a budget, you can naturally lower the costs of gluten-free foods by avoiding a large quantity of processed foods—and by processed I mean store-bought crackers, cookies, chips, etc.

Snacks and bread items are the biggest gluten-free foods that are easy to purchase, but can take up a good portion of your budget! Related post: Check out best tips to keep veggies fresh as long as possible. Without a plan, we tend to make impulse buys instead of hunting for the best deals.

And it adds up. You can download my meal plan freebie template in the freebie library, or just print off your own favorite design! Because there are a lot of naturally gluten-free foods. When meal planning, incorporate more meals that utilize starches that are from potato, rice, corn, and beans like many Asian and Mexican dishes.

Tamari is pure soy sauce, and is made fully out of soy. Read those labels and buy tamari! The price difference is worth it here. Coupons should not drive your menu plan. Your menu plan should drive what items you buy.

Look outside of this aisle for snacks and items that are naturally gluten-free or again, make your own!

I also love to grab a box of pre-made cookies these are my-all time favorite for a road trip. Maybe even some pretzels. These items are great for treats, but buying them regularly will make for an expensive gluten-free diet.

I use the elbows and penne in one skillet dishes all the time where you cook the pasta in the pan with everything else.

They also have fettucini, which is relatively new to their line. Jovial Foods — Jovial makes some really great pasta — it would be my first choice if I were able to purchase it locally.

Just be sure to get their gluten free pasta and not their pasta made with Einkorn, which is an ancient wheat and not gluten free. Rice Noodles — Rice noodles are great for stir fry. I always have one or two boxes of these in my pantry. They cook incredibly fast! General : We buy packaged gluten free snacks think snack packs at our local grocery store.

Some of our favorites are Enjoy Life Foods bars, Enjoy Life Foods mini cookies, Kind bars, Bixby Co. Glutino and Sharr are also great brands for snacks and we can find them at Walmart and our local grocery stores.

Walmart Great Value brand , Aldi liveGfree , and grocery stores also carry packaged gluten free snacks like cookies, graham crackers, pretzels, and crackers.

Envirokidz also has good snack bars. One Degree Sprouted Brown Rice Cereal is also good for gluten free rice crispies. Oatmeal — Be sure to buy gluten free oatmeal.

You can also use your food processor to grind it into flour. Certified and purity protocol are best if you have celiac disease. When purchasing gluten free oatmeal, please read labels and make decisions that work for you and your family.

Jules from gfJules has a great post about gluten free oats if you have questions about it. Bread : we buy a variety of brands. Sharr makes great ciabatta rolls that I often use to make gluten free garlic bread. Canyon Bake House has really great bread, hamburger rolls, hot dog rolls, and bagels.

Their Mountain White bread is great for sandwiches, gluten free stuffing, and making homemade breadcrumbs and croutons. Their cinnamon raisin is great for French Toast and French Toast Casseroles. Canyon Bake House is definitely our go-to brand from gluten free bread.

If you like sourdough, Bread Srsly makes some great sourdough loaves and rolls. The 4C brand gives fried foods a really crispy exterior. I like to double-bread too for that extra crispy yum factor.

I usually order in bulk so I always meet the minimum for free shipping. PRO TIP: Thrive Market usually offers a free gift about once a week in their emails so I like to wait for something good like coconut oil, almond butter, nuts, or Primal Kitchen products like mayo or snack bars before placing my order.

Amazon — Amazon has pretty much everything I need and their prices are often very good. If you have a co-op near you, I suggest checking it out and seeing if their prices and membership are worth it to you. Local Stores — Many grocery stores in my area are increasing their gluten free products. Stop and Shop is in the northeast and is one of my local stores that carries SO many great gluten free products.

I have found that they have become my go-go store because they have almost everything I need. Since they are both 45 min to an hour away, I do not shop at either of them. Walmart — Walmart has a decent line of their own gluten free products.

The Walmart closest to me has a small gluten free section but there are also gluten free items and products integrated into the rest of the grocery aisles.

For example, there are several kinds of gluten free flours and cake mixes in the baking aisle in addition to the ones in the gluten free section. The same goes for bread crumbs, pretzels, and even pasta.

Aldi — Aldi has their own line of ready-made gluten free products and baking mixes, liveGfree. Target — Target has a number of gluten free products that my family enjoys.

Why charge more for a case of six when someone can buy six eaches for less?! They are good to check before buying elsewhere, because sometimes they have good price cuts. I always check Wally and Amazon before I order something. The best new product I discovered at Walmart was the Lance gluten free mini peanut butter sandwich crackers.

I use it as a checklist and go through my pantry and refrigerator every week to make sure I still have everything on the list. This was doable as long as I planned to buy dog food, diapers, and toiletries during the second half of the month.

My solution to this problem was to bring a calculator and pencil along on the shopping trip. When something goes into the cart I write the price down on the back of my pantry list.

If I get to the end of my shopping trip and realize that I need to put some things back, they are, at least, easy to find. When I find a pantry item at a good price, I like to stock up. My pantry shopping list can though. The first time that you shop with the list, jot down the price of each pantry item that you purchase in the price column.

Every time that you shop, check the prices again. When you find a lower price, just mark through the old one, write down the new price and update your list when you get home. Trips to the store during the week are my budgeting downfall.

I never save any money for these trips, so pretty much anything we have to buy between big shopping trips is outside of our budget. And we always buy more than we on into the store for. The only solution that I see to this problem is to do a better job of planning meals and making my grocery list.

Monitoring the receipts should give me some answers, and possible some new strategies for saving. For me this has been a pretty easy strategy because I tend to shop around the edges of the grocery store, where most products are sold by the pound. Think produce and meat well not meat for us, but you get the idea.

If I find a great deal on a food that will store well like potatoes I stock up. Otherwise I just try to keep in mind the foods that are usually under my price limit and plan meals around them. Before I even sit down to plan my weekly menu, I peruse the pantry, refrigerator and freezer to see what foods I have on hand.

Usually I find that there is some sort of produce that needs to be used, or a pantry staple that has been lingering in the cupboard.

In short, the more that fresh foods are processed the more they cost — boneless, skinless chicken breasts cost more per pound than a whole chicken.

So, if you want to reduce your grocery costs, start prepping your own food. Before we switched to a vegetarian diet I would often buy large packs of bone-in chicken breasts and then spend 30 minutes or so deboning all of them and packaging them for the freezer.

 Check the Lessons Index for a few lessons on veggie prep. Okay, this one may be tough. Stop spending money on food that is bad for you.  My philosophy on this is that my grocery dollars are precious and they need to provide as much nutrition as possible.

We have almost completely eliminated junk foods and sweets from our diets. If we do have them, we make them at home. Not eating junk food is a habit that we worked on over time. Instead we eliminated things from our diet as we were ready to give them up.

For instance I stopped eating ice cream when dairy foods started causing a lot of tummy issues. We are currently working towards reducing our chip and beer consumption. I associated vegetarian meals, especially those filled with beans, with poverty.

The main reason that we decided to stick with a vegetarian diet after we completed a day trial was that the food was so much more flavorful than what we were accustomed to. All that said, beans and tofu are much cheaper than meat.

 Even if you just eat vegetarian for a few days a week you should see some cost savings.  Be adventurous and explore some new recipes and you might just surprise yourself. I should caveat this by saying that soy and rice based dairy products are usually more expensive than cow based.

We still eat cow cheese and sour cream, but we have greatly reduce the amount of these foods in our diet. Over time our taste buds have adjusted and we find it easier to use smaller amounts.

After reading the first post you should have a good idea of what you will be eating for each meal this first week. The next step is to make your grocery list. I usually use PRODUCE, FROZEN, DAIRY, MEAT, CANNED GOODS, DRY GOODS, and HOUSEHOLD.

Now, go through the list of your meals and write down each ingredient that you need to buy. Remember, on this first shopping trip the goal is to read as few labels as possible. If they are not and they contain any processed products I would strongly recommend that you change your menu to not include these foods.

If there are some essentials that you need to replace — like mayo, ketchup, etc. Wheat is so ubiquitous in the Standard American Diet that we often forget that we are eating it. Here are a few foods that you may not realize contain wheat.

The best tips that I can give you for the grocery store are to stick to the outside aisles and whole, unprocessed foods. Follow your grocery list and look forward to feeling better during the coming week.

Also check to see if you they have a special location for gluten free foods, or if they shelve them near their gluten-filled counterparts. But I really do want you to feel better quickly, and the easiest way to accomplish that is to get ALL of the gluten out of your diet.

And the individual containers of applesauce are perfect to use in cake mixes in place of butter or to add to a bag lunch. Dried goods. Dried beans come in all kinds of varieties and they cook rather quickly. There is a large selection of dried fruits on the market that can be added to cookies, cakes, salads, used to stuff a pork roast, or to put over cereal in the morning.

Stock a variety of rice Arborio, basmati, white, brown, and wild rice , but do not buy the pre-seasoned boxes or packaged wild rice as most of these are not gluten-free.

The variety of gluten-free pasta is increasing every day, so treat yourself and keep a nice selection of pasta on that pantry shelf for Spaghetti Bolognese, or macaroni and cheese, or Italian wedding soup, or pasta salad.

Bottles, jars and condiments. Using different oils and vinegars varies the taste of your foods. Stock a good quality virgin olive oil, a corn oil, and perhaps a sesame or peanut oil for stir-frying. While apple cider vinegar is the norm, a good balsamic vinegar is excellent not only in salads, but for marinating meats and vegetables before grilling or broiling.

Gluten-free soy sauce is another useful condiment for marinating foods, adding to rice, and of course for stir-frying. There are some excellent gluten-free barbecue sauces that are also handy to have around. A jar of roasted red peppers will put the finishing touch on a pasta salad, pasta primavera, antipasto tray when unexpected company arrives, or to add to sandwiches.

Gluten-free pickles and pepperoncini are great to pack in bag lunches. Honey will come in handy when making tea, sugar syrups to pour over pastries, to use in cookies, or to use as a dip for warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven gluten-free biscuits.

Other condiments include gluten-free ketchup, mustard, mayo, molasses, lemon juice, maple syrup or gluten-free pancake syrup , peanut butter, jelly, and salsa, and perhaps a bag of gluten-free tortilla chips.

Baking needs. This category includes granulated sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, cornstarch, baking soda, gluten-free baking powder, and perhaps yeast. Cocoa is good for making hot chocolate and adding to cakes, but beware of hot chocolate mixes because many are not gluten-free.

A variety of nuts is nice to have close at hand to put on top of hot or cold cereal, add to salads, desserts, dips, stir-fries, or just to eat plain as a snack.

You will be glad to have a can of evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk on your shelf when you want to bake desserts. I have not included flours in this category because the alternative, gluten-free flours have a short shelf life.

You are better off keeping the flours in the freezer. However, there are some excellent gluten-free breadcrumbs on the market that you may want to include on your pantry shelf for breading chicken, using in meatloaf and meatballs, and sprinkling on casseroles.

Boxes foods. Add flavored gelatin to cake mixes for a whole new taste treat. Or use twice as much unflavored gelatin in place of the xanthan gum called for in a recipe. Gluten-free packaged puddings are a good staple also. Mix vanilla or tapioca pudding with fruit juice then blend in cut-up fruits.

Use pudding mix in cakes… or just make pudding! There are new gluten-free cereals coming on the market all the time. A box of gluten-free brownie or cake mix and a can of gluten-free frosting is a good back up for spur of the moment events.

Herbs and spices. Use herbs liberally, both for their flavor and for their medicinal purposes. Fresh herbs are best, when available. Herbs and spices that are highly recommended for the pantry include: salt, pepper, oregano, basil, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, chili powder, cumin, dill, dry mustard, paprika, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, mint, cream of tartar, and dried parsley.

For flavorings, vanilla and almond flavoring are a must. Liqueurs, when kept in a cool, dark place, last almost indefinitely and their concentrated flavors add a lot of flavor to ice cream toppings, brownies, cream pie fillings, and more. Wine adds richness to marinades, salad dressings, sauces, and is perfect to use when de-glazing a pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together first 6 ingredients. Add remaining ingredients; toss, cover with plastic wrap, then refrigerate for several hours before serving.

Sweet Rice flour and rice flour look and smell alike, but have different properties when cooking yes label as much as possible it prevents mistakes. Non-dairy items as necessary for some folks too.
