This formula has also been competitive in other categories too, even ranking high on our list of the Best Laundry Detergents for Babies.

It's fragrance-free, but still leaves a light and clean scent behind. During testing, we found that the packaging may leak. Still, we liked that most clothes came out soft and pliable, and our tested towel was fluffy, too the exception was a white shirt feeling a bit stiff.

Marking Gain's second appearance on our list, the powder also received rave reviews for its delightful fragrance and reasonable price per load. We thought it did a solid job of fading the majority of stains and removing a chocolate stain.

In our eyes, Gain Original Powder Detergent is a good staple to keep on hand for regular washes or to pair with a trusted stain remover when it comes to heavily soiled items. The cardboard box package design includes a plastic handle on top for carrying, and we found it easy to use the included measuring cup to scoop out the needed amount.

There were five marks on the included measuring cup for small to extra large loads, so it's a breeze to adjust your level of soap, depending on the amount of dirty linens and clothing. With the exception of the linen napkin, tested items also felt soft to the touch as they came out of the dryer.

The fragrance earned high marks, too, just as it did in Gain's liquid counterpart. We noticed the nice scent almost as soon as we opened the box. After everything dried, the fragrance was less strong, but it definitely had a pleasing, clean odor.

If you want your clothes to feel soft and smell fresh, we think Gain's powdered version is a great choice. Type : Powder Size : ounces Number of Loads : Scent : Original. Pods have many advantages over traditional liquid detergents. We found that pods are just as effective as liquid or powder formulas, too.

During our testing in the lab, the Tide Pods rivaled dozens of other competitors in their stain-fighting prowess. The pods cleaned well, and laundered items felt less stiff after going through a cycle. We also like the pleasant scent, which was clean but not overpowering. As a result, the value is really there.

The one area of caution with pods is that wet hands can quickly ruin a supply, but this isn't unique to Tide by any means.

Type : Pods Size : 81 pods Number of Loads : Up to 81 Scent : Spring Meadow. As our pick for Best Eco-Friendly, you better bet the laundry sheets from Ecos are an environmentally-conscious laundry detergent.

Here's why: they come tucked in recyclable cardboard boxes, and they're formulated without dyes, phthalates, or formaldehyde. Plus, they're a cinch to use. Just add one sheet to each load of wash. When it comes to spot removal, like many of our picks, you'll want to supplement with a targeted stain remover for your most soiled clothes.

But you can still expect comfy results, as most of the tested items came out of the wash feeling less stiff and smelling great. Speaking of the smell, when the sheets were in the box, we did pick up a very light chemical scent, but after washing, it dissipated and the clothes smelled clean.

In a competitive category, the Hex liquid detergent squeaked ahead of its peers. In our lab, we observed that all laundered items felt soft and pliable, with the washcloth in particular coming out light and fluffy. Plus, this detergent's stain-fighting prowess was slightly above-average when compared to other tested detergents.

Here's what we love about it: The bottle is easy to use, lift, and pour from because it's small this detergent is concentrated, which means you need less of it compared with the others on our list. It did leave a light chemical smell, but not a bothersome one.

One area of potential improvement is the clarity between the packaging and the measurements on the cap. We noted that the company uses ounces as the primary measurement listed in the directions, yet milliliters are listed on the measurement cap.

You'll need to do a little math, but just remember, 1 milliliter equals 0. Despite this minor flaw, we recommend HEX for its stain-fighting abilities and ease of use. When it comes to our choice for Best Unscented, there's lots to appreciate with Molly's Suds Unscented Laundry Detergent Powder, including many of the thoughtful details behind the package design and usability.

For starters, the scoop is small and the formula is concentrated, so you'll get a lot of product and uses from just one bag. The package is also light and easy to carry when buying groceries or traveling to your laundry room. It also has a sandwich-like seal, protecting the contents inside.

As far as stain-fighting abilities, we would describe those as fairly average, but we still see a lot to appreciate in the formula.

It's unscented, free of dyes, and safe for most sensitive skin. In the lab, it was consistent with a lot of our favorite picks. For example, it didn't excel in targeted stain removal, but still showed prowess as a detergent for those regular washes where you're not dealing with heavily soiled items.

Oh, and if you find that you enjoy the formula, but want a scented option down the road, they have plenty of options including citrus, eucalyptus, and peppermint.

Type : Powder Size : Perhaps it is not a surprise that another Gain product made it to the top of our list for scented detergents. This time it's in pod form. Based on our experience with these pods in the lab, we wouldn't change a thing about them.

Our test items were left smelling clean, but the scent wasn't overpowering at all. Plus, we appreciated their cleaning ability, too, because it even appeared to brighten whites.

In the case of Gain Flings, even the packaging earned a thumbs-up. The plastic container was light and easy to use and lift. It doesn't get much simpler than dropping a pod into the wash basin of your machine. Usually one pod will do. When it came to stain removal, like many of the detergents we tested, a marked difference was made in the stains, but they were still visible.

In other words, these pods won't fully replace your favorite stain remover. For a regular wash, it did the trick, and left our towel feeling fluffy. They're available in multiple scents, and refill packs are sold, so you can reuse the plastic container to your heart's content.

Type : Pods Size : 81 pods Number of Loads : up to 81 Scent : Original. We suggest Gain Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap Plus Aroma Boost. It's effective, has a pleasant smell, and is easy on your wallet. Not only is it cost-effective, but it also has a baking soda-based formula that's easy on your skin.

These products are ones we tested and found impressive. Love Home and Planet Ultra Concentrated Laundry Detergent : There was plenty to appreciate when it came to this eco-friendly option.

All of the laundry smelled clean after being washed and dried, the smell was pleasant, and we appreciated the auto-dose cap that was easy to use and didn't lead to messes like certain other cap styles. Ultimately, though, these pluses didn't quite elevate it above other choices that performed better on stains and offered better value.

Blueland Laundry Starter Set : Surprisingly, we did not have a lot of success with these popular tablets. In particular, after going through the wash, bits of spaghetti sauce remained on the napkin and the grass stain seemed to transfer onto other clothes. After the laundry was dry, we could still smell some of the leftover stains, subtly mixed together, which has us thinking that some residue was left behind on the textiles, which isn't ideal.

It's worth noting that we've had good experiences with other Blueland products , so we still see potential in their line and will be keeping an eye to see if they make any changes to their detergent formula. In one unique case, a member of our team used Seventh Generation at home and had a good experience with it.

She was happy with this brand of detergent, but did not use it solely on tough set-in stains. If you have a trusted stain remover you'd use in conjunction with this detergent, then Seventh Generation might be a winner for you.

We put 29 laundry detergents to the test in The Lab during a rigorous hands-on process. First, using detergent brand guidelines, our testers started wash cycles with previously-stained items. One cotton T-shirt, athletic polyester T-shirt, terry cloth towel, and linen napkin were included, all marked with three to four stains that included jojoba oil, chocolate, foundation, mud, grass, and in the case of the linen napkin, spaghetti sauce.

While the items were washed, duplicate fresh stains were created so our testers could compare results. Once items were washed and dried, testers assessed the overall cleanliness and stain removal effectiveness of each laundry detergent, paying careful attention to each stain.

Testers also carefully assessed scent by smelling each item and noting whether or not it smelled clean or contained residual smells from the stains. A feel , or texture examination, was also completed, allowing testers to check for softness, fluffiness, and any other changes noticeable by touch.

Each product's ease of use was noted as well, with testers rating how simple it was or wasn't! to measure and add detergent to washers. These laundry pods are also free from dyes, phosphates, and optical brighteners. And the company is partnered with Oceana , an organization dedicated to protecting fisheries and removing plastics from the sea.

However, we found the packaging of the Fresh Start pods a little cumbersome and one of the packages we received had a burst pod.

Earth Breeze sheets are no ordinary laundry soap, but rather cellulose pads soaked in detergent. However, we noticed that the fresh scent the sheets were supposed to impart did not last long. These sheets are ideal for people who want a completely plastic- and mess-free laundry experience.

The Earth Breeze laundry sheets are also a great option if you're short on space or don't want to deal with picking up a heavy laundry detergent bottle. Tru Earth laundry strips are easy to use because you simply tear and toss the strip into the washer.

It combines the convenience of a detergent pod while being easier to transport and less enticing to children. As a stain fighter, we found these strips to be on par with some of the top contenders on this list. The recommended dose for a medium-sized load is half a strip and weighs just a fraction of what liquid competitors recommend.

The whole package weighs just 2. Also, these hypoallergenic laundry strips contain no added dyes and are paraben-, phosphate-, and chlorine bleach-free. Combine that with the fact that the strips are biodegradable and the packaging is plastic-free, Tru Earth laundry strips ended up pretty high on our list.

The Method laundry detergent might seem like a good idea if other detergents are too expensive, but it lacks a no-mess pump bottle and some stain-removal power of Method's 8X detergent.

However, Method's 3-in-1 detergent is one of our favorite detergents. We did miss the no-mess pump of the 8X because the cap, which doubles as a measuring cup, felt a bit too small so spills happened often. Even though a less-concentrated detergent wastes energy in the shipping process by moving water, at least the 3-in-1 formula is somewhat environmentally sound.

By our count, nearly all of the contents in the bottle are either biodegradable or plant-derived. Our reviewers loved both the scent and the price. However, in our stain removal tests, it couldn't stand up to the best "green" suds or traditional detergents that use harsh chemicals. It had a particularly tough time with grease stains.

That being said, it's important to remember that most clothes just aren't that dirty. If you work in agriculture or construction, you might want to steer clear of Biokleen laundry detergent, but it could be a fine choice for folks who just need to spruce up their laundry and enjoy smelling like oranges.

The Biokleen laundry detergents are plant-based and made in the U. without artificial fragrances or dyes. Additionally, Biokleen laundry detergents are cruelty-free and do not contain phosphates, chlorine, ammonia, or brighteners.

Ecos laundry detergent has been around for decades and is a crowd favorite. We tested the magnolia-and-lily-scented version. The smell reminds us a little of essential oils—light, yet pleasant.

This detergent is also made in the U. and sports an EPA Safe Choice badge. The reason we ranked this lower down the list is because we liked the scent of Biokleen more and Tru Earth has a bit of an edge in eco-friendliness.

Instead, it gets your clothes clean and fresh smelling with the power of mostly baking soda and peppermint oil. Powdered detergents are often more eco-friendly to ship because unlike liquid detergents they do not contain any water.

I test tons of detergents, ranging from sport detergents to those for sensitive skin. When it comes to eco-friendly detergents, I specifically wanted to find a product that did not have any optical brighteners or synthetic fragrances. To test stain removal, we pitted all detergents against standardized cloth test strips coated with carbon, body oils, blood, cocoa, and red wine.

We put them through a cold Normal cycle in an LG front loader set to use cold water—along with eight pounds of towels, pillowcases, and sheets—closely following each manufacturer's instructions for a medium load. After waiting 12 hours for the stain strips to dry in a dark room, we used a piece of lab equipment called a photo-spectrometer to determine exactly how much of each stain had been lifted.

Aside from effectiveness, we also looked at the companies that made each detergent. We looked for companies that practiced what they preached in terms of caring for the environment and created a detergent that could get your clothes clean for a good price. Its relative cost-effectiveness also earned it a lot of points.

Testing eco-friendly detergents can be a minefield. For example, a company may tout an ethanol-based detergent that could actually have a greater environmental impact than petroleum-based soaps until better technologies emerge. Also, coconut and palm oil may be renewable, but they may encourage deforestation.

And the green practice of making a biodegradable or recyclable bottle may be offset by the transportation costs of moving a more watery detergent.

Aside from testing the product itself, we also reviewed the corporations that created them. The detergents we tested got points if the companies that made them were B-types or use LEED-certified facilities. The bottom line is that nearly all detergent ingredients can be harmful.

Through its Safer Choice program , the EPA encourages manufacturers to use the safest possible ingredients in their products. Prices were accurate at the time this article was published but may change over time. The product experts at Reviewed have all your shopping needs covered.

Laundry detergent sheets are convenient to take on the go, require minimal storage space in the laundry room and are usually easier to dose than liquid laundry detergent. When we tested 24 of the most popular detergent sheet brands , this sheet from EC30 came out on top in both our stain testing and our fabric whiteness restoring tests.

In fact, they were the only detergent sheet we tested that even came close to the results we saw with traditional laundry detergent packs.

Just use one sheet for a regular load and two for large or heavily soiled loads. And though they were the slowest to dissolve in our Lab tests, we did not find any residue in any of the laundry loads we washed with these sheets. The packaging label had clear dosing instructions and safety precautions, too.

Take note that these sheets have a higher cost per load than any other detergent sheet on this list, but if you subscribe to receive them automatically, you can save about 10 cents per load. Type : Sheet Number of loads per box : 30 Cost per load : 97 cents. We recently tested it again for our newest Cleaning and Organizing Awards.

It earned the highest stain removal score out of the 28 brands we tested, doing particularly well on chocolate syrup, lipstick and wine stains. During our review of the detergent label, we found that the dosing instructions were clear and easy to follow, and it had all of the necessary safety precautions clearly printed on the label.

Our consumer testers rated it well too, though a few noted that while they would like to continue to use this detergent in their homes, they were unsure that they would because it is not widely available at their usual shopping outlets.

The laundry detergent pods from the brand were also good performers in our Lab tests and are included in our guide to the best eco-friendly laundry detergents , too. Type : Liquid Number of loads per bottle : 32 Cost per load : 45 cents.

Not only did it perform well on our Lab-stained swatches, but it was a favorite with our consumer panel as well. One tester exclaimed that it removed dried berry and grass stains without pretreating, and another said she was switching to Persil from her regular brand.

The colorful discs dissolve easily in all water temperatures and the oxi component is safe to use on colors and whites. In our testing, we found the tub is a bit difficult to open the first time, which is great for safety around children, but not the most convenient for adults.

Type : Packs Number of loads per tub : 38 Cost per load : 47 cents. Making a detergent that's safe for those with sensitive skin is about more than just removing the dyes and fragrances. It also has to clean well to remove hidden soi ls that can irritate and inflame delicate skin.

Tide's Power Pods Free check both boxes. A winner for cleaning and stain removal in a previous year's Good Housekeeping Cleaning Awards, this Tide detergent beat out all the other detergents we tested in removing stains like ketchup, red wine and grass.

The fact that it's gentle on skin and recognized by the National Psoriasis Foundation and the National Eczema Association makes it a great choice for those easily irritated by other detergents.

And like the regular version, these jumbo packs can handle jumbo loads but may be too large for small loads. Type : Packs Number of loads per tub : 63 Cost per load : 50 cents.

Just looking at the Safely laundry detergent bottle — part of Kris Jenner's cleaning line — tells you it's something different, and once you open the cap and take a sniff, you'll know it's something different.

While we haven't yet done our usual battery of stain tests on Safely, so far we are impressed with how it's cleaned the loads of laundry we have done at home. Most noticeable is its amazing scent.

It's crisp and natural smelling, not heavy or artificial. And we like that it leaves clothing smelling clean, fresh and oh-so-lightly scented — not overly perfumed — even out of the dryer. Online reviewers rave about it, and a new scent "Calm" has recently been introduced to the line.

We also like the tall, slim easy-to-store bottle and the outer cap that doubles as a clearly-marked measuring cup. After measuring out your dose, though, the cap will need rinsing to keep the bottle from getting drippy.

Type : Liquid Number of loads per bottle : 40 Cost per load : 35 cents. The best way to prevent your favorite black jeans from fading to gray after just a few washes is to wash them inside out, in cold water and with a color-preserving detergent, like Woolite All Darks.

Its special formula pulls color-fading metal and chlorine ions from the wash water, smooths rough fibers and severs the pills that can make fabrics look old before their time.

At just 24 cents per regular load, it is less expensive than other laundry detergents we've tested. Woolite's neutral formula removes light everyday soils from all fabrics and is a GH Cleaning Lab favorite for cleaning and protecting delicate fabrics and dark colors from the abrasive effects of washing.

For heavily soiled clothing and items with lots of stains, this formula may not be the best option. Type : Liquid Number of loads per bottle : 66 Cost per load : 24 cents.

Babies have sensitive skin that needs to be protected, but boy, can they make stains! That's why new parents need a detergent that's an effective cleaner, but doesn't leave harsh residues behind, and Dreft is a long-time favorite. It contains enzymes to effectively remove protein stains, like formula or poop!

The brand has created a sister detergent to this Stage 1 formula for when your tots have outgrown their onesies. That one's formulated to tackle the stains you're most likely to see at this stage of your baby's growth.

In GH Cleaning Lab tests, Dreft cleaned and removed stains as well as traditional adult detergents. And the cleaner clothes are, the less irritating they are on delicate skin.

Dreft's hypoallergenic formula means no skin-irritating residues will be left behind. If your child's skin is super sensitive and you prefer a detergent without fragrance, consider the plant-based and fragrance-free version, Dreft Pure Gentleness Liquid Detergent.

Type : Liquid Number of loads per bottle : 32 Cost per load : 41 cents. In the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care and Cleaning Lab we have tested well over different laundry detergents from dozens of brands. For every new laundry detergent we test, we first review the labeling for the thoroughness of the directions, how much is recommended to use for medium, large and heavily soiled loads and whether it contains the required safety labeling cautions required by law based on the ingredients.

For any claims we can't test in the Lab, we ask the manufacturers to supply us with support documentation that we review. We then apply a battery of 20 carefully measured stains including grease, coffee, wine and more to white cotton and polyester woven and knit fabrics and allow the stains to set for 24 hours before we wash them.

In just our last test of 42 detergents, we applied and rated over 2, stains! The next day, the swatches are washed in top- and front-loading washing machines in hot, warm or cold water with 7 to 8 pounds of additional items like towels, t-shirts, sheets and pillowcases to simulate an actual at-home load.

We add in the amount of detergent recommended on the label for a load with heavy soil and run the cycle. When it's done, we remove the swatch and allow it to air dry. Then, we take the fabric to a special dark grading room where — under standard industry lighting — we grade the removal of each of the 20 stains on a one to five industry scale where five is complete removal and one is no removal.

We also have a spectrophotometer that allows us to measure the amount of each stain left behind on the fabric after washing and calculate a soil removal score pictured above. Finally, we note how neat and easy the detergent is to dispense, the amount of suds it produces and if it leaves any noticeable residue behind on our test loads or in our machines.

While most laundry detergents can be used to wash white clothes, dark clothes, bedding, towels and most other types of garments, there are still a few things to consider when choosing the right laundry detergent for your home.

Select the detergent form that is most convenient for you and your home. All washing machines have liquid and powder detergent dispensers. Most pack and sheet detergents should be placed directly in the washer tub and can be used in both front- and top-loading washing machines.

Many new machines now have dispensers that can handle detergent packs, so always check both the washer and detergent directions for the best place to add them. Whatever detergent type you decide to buy, read the label carefully to ensure that it does not contain any ingredients that could damage your garments.

Instead, look at the price per load of the detergents you are considering. In general, powder and liquid detergents cost less per load than pack and sheet detergents. Unscented detergents are especially beneficial for homes with allergy sufferers or those with sensitivities to strong scents.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each type. Which form you choose will depend on personal preference, which you find most convenient to use and most effective based on the brand and the types of laundry loads you do.

Detergents in this category tend to perform well on outdoor stains like mud, clay or grass, so it's great for little ones' soccer uniforms and your gardening clothes. Keep in mind: Powder must be stored in a completely dry area to avoid clumping.

Also note that if you like washing in cold water, some powders may not dissolve completely and as a result, unwanted residue may settle on your clothing.

Conveniently, it can be used as a spot pre-treater, and you'll never have to worry about it not dissolving. Don't forget to use the correct amount, though: The lines on the measuring caps are there for a reason! Too much will cause over-sudsing and the soap may not rinse out when the cycle is over.

Use too little, and your clothes won't get clean. Trust us: You get better results when you use the recommended amount.

You don't have to worry about using too little or too much detergent as it is already pre-measured. Usually, one pack is recommended for average-sized loads and two packs for large or heavily soiled loads. One pack may be too much for very small loads, and you never want to break them.

Keep in mind : Some packs have trouble dissolving in some machines, especially at lower water temperatures, so make sure you add the packs before adding the clothes.

Some newer machines now have sections in the dispenser drawer just for these packs so they dissolve better in less water.

The 24 detergent sheets we tested did not perform as well as many liquid, pack and powder detergents we have tested in the past, but unlike with detergent packs, you can break sheets apart to use for hand washing clothing, and they can be easily tucked into luggage for on the go cleaning.

Safety Note: Make sure you store your single-use laundry packets in their original containers and away from children, pets and anyone else who could be at risk of ingesting them or using them for anything other than laundry. For safety reasons, we don't recommend placing packs in unmarked decorative jars to leave on display in your laundry area.

We won't recommend any liquid single-dose detergents that don't come in child-resistant packaging with appropriate safe storage and use directions. Start with the recommended dosage on the detergent label.

Manufacturers formulate detergents differently, so the amount you use for one brand may not be adequate for another. Most detergent directions include dosage recommendations for medium or regular loads and for large or heavily-soiled loads. Add more for extra large and extra dirty loads or if your water is especially hard, but careful, use too much and you risk over-sudsing.
