Affordable meal prep containers

This bento box stacks three trays high and offers eight unique compartments for your meal components, including a cute round dip holder for ketchup, mayo, or salad dressing. It stacks very nicely and cleanly and the fact that it's dishwasher safe is a huge bonus. I make homemade meals for my hubby and me, and I always cook extra to freeze for later dates when I don't feel like slaving over the stove.

These are good portion-sizes and easy to wash. I even put them in the dishwasher with no issues. This piece set is as beautiful as it is functional. Also, the fact that I don't have to transfer food out of the container to go into the stove or microwave is a huge win and lessens what I have to clean.

These deeper plastic meal prep containers are perfect for transporting leafy salads, grain bowls, and even soups. They have tight-fitting clear lids and nest together neatly for easy storage. They don't change colors like the flimsy black containers.

The lids also fit really snugly. I will be ordering more from this brand. This fully-stainless steel bento box has two levels and removable trays.

Two of the trays hold three cups each, and one smaller insert holds three-fourths of a cup for a side dish or dip.

The trays nest securely together and two clamps hold everything in place. The box is sturdy re: has weight to it. The locking caps are pretty tight in a good way, but I think would be difficult to open for a small child or elderly person. I would buy it again.

Its one-liter capacity is ample space for salads, bowls, and pasta dishes. The opaque lid is held in place by a secure, grippy silicone strap. Plus, the unbreakable BPA-free plastic construction makes this bowl exceptionally durable. They hold just the right amount of food, they clean perfectly in the dishwasher, and their design is sleek and clever.

The strap-sealed lid works perfectly—nothing EVER leaks! We own four of these, and the one that is four-years-old looks as brand new as the three we just got. Great product!! This set of three squishy silicone boxes is super lightweight and portable. The three ounce rectangular containers collapse nearly flat, which is a great feature for storing in a small kitchen space.

Plus, they come in three cute colors! They easily fit into my purse when going out. They work perfectly for our leftovers. This set of three ounce containers has tight-fitting silicone lids held in place by a seal that prevents leaks on-the-go.

They have colorful designs, so the containers can double as serving dishes, too. So pretty and perfect for taking my bowls of soup to work!

Wonderful purchase! These heavy-duty plastic reusable meal prep containers are inexpensive and highly practical, with two spacious compartments to divide up your meal.

The fifty-pack is a great pack for two people prepping together. The larger bottom compartment can hold a quartered sandwich, a serving of pasta, or a burrito. Three equally-sized smaller sections are a good size for snacks and dips.

Because the silicone-bordered lids are a little harder to clean by hand than those of the Glasslocks containers, we recommend these only if having interchangeable lids between plastic and glass sets is important to you. If the Snapware set is sold out: We like the lids on the plastic OXO Good Grips Smart Seal Plastic Container Set just as much as the ones on the glass version.

The lids on all of our picks the locking-style lids on the Glasslocks or Snapware containers and the press-on style lids from Pyrex and Rubbermaid take some effort to get on and off.

Suction lids, by contrast, simply sit atop a bowl or container you already own to cover it. We also tried the GIR lids, which come in more sizes and colors. I found them easier to put on, take off, and clean than firmer lids with ridges or tabs; maybe you will too. There are just two shape and size options in the Rubbermaid Brilliance glass set, and the lids are more difficult to shut and pry off than those of our picks.

The Anchor Hocking Glass Food Storage Set survived our drop tests, but the containers leaked more than the similarly designed glass Pyrex containers we tested. The flimsy lids in this set also held onto odors more than our picks. They also have fewer shape options, and the locking lids require more force to shut than our plastic containers pick.

The lids are a little harder to align and lock, compared with our picks. In our update, these were the only plastic containers to have freezer burn and to stain after our tomato sauce test.

These containers also shattered in our drop test. The Rubbermaid Premier set did very well in nearly all of our tests, but it was difficult to tell when the lid was sealed properly.

We also thought the container sizes were a little too small for holding leftovers. The Snapware Airtight Plastic Food Container Set we recommended in had faulty lid flaps that were difficult to close when they were tested again in This set also held onto food odors and stains more than the competition.

This set is no longer available in these shapes, but there is a set of round containers. These containers also no longer come in a set with varying shapes and sizes, so every piece must be purchased individually. The Glad MatchWare color-coded lids and containers made matching pairs easy.

But they leaked, stained, and left ground meat covered with freezer burn. These containers also exploded in our drop tests. The colors and patterns on this set have changed since our original review, though the containers are the same.

You prefer oven-safe containers though you should still double-check whether a container can go in a preheated or cold oven. Choose one of our plastic picks if any of the following apply:.

You want something that is less likely to shatter. You want a cheaper option that you can leave behind at potlucks or stock up on for meal prep. Your family members tend to lose containers. You want something lighter to carry around. A note on tempered vs.

other types of glass. How we picked and tested. Not only will a good seal help food last longer, but leakproof construction is also important for transporting liquids. Many of the models we tested have a gasket seal around the lip and plastic hinges that snap shut, so you know the container is sealed properly.

Easy to clean: We wanted containers that could go in the dishwasher. For easier cleanup, we preferred containers that had sealing lids with removable gaskets because you can remove and wash them separately this also prevents mold buildup.

Easy to stack and store: Containers that can nest or stack neatly will be easier to store and nicer to look at. And the shapes and sizes will affect how easy it is to store containers—square or rectangular containers will maximize fridge or freezer space.

We tried to pick sets with a good range from large to small, with emphasis on rectangular or square space-saving shapes. We also preferred glass and plastic sets that had interchangeable lids among containers, so finding the right lid will be a little easier.

Heat-safe: We wanted containers that could go in the microwave, so that eliminated stainless steel. For glass containers, we also preferred options that were preheated-oven—safe or oven-safe so you can warm food in the same container.

Translucent: The containers should be clear or easy to see through, so you know what is inside without having to open them. Meal prep containers are an excellent way to store, portion, and transport food when users are on the go or intend to eat their meals later.

They are available in a variety of sizes and materials, including plastic, glass, and stainless steel. For example, glass meal prep containers come in a variety of sizes and shapes, including round, square, and rectangles, allowing users to pack different types of food while conserving space.

Plastic containers: Plastic food prep containers are cheap, lightweight, and excellent for preserving the freshness of the food. They are also dishwasher and microwave-safe, which makes them highly practical. They are less long-lasting than other container types. Plastic containers are lightweight and less expensive than steel and glass containers.

Disposable meal prep containers: Due to their fragility and breakability or inability to withstand washing and reuse, they are typically only suitable for one-time storage use. Glass containers: Glass is a non-toxic, easy-to-clean, secure material that can be used to store food.

Glass lunch containers don't absorb odors, and they are microwave and dishwasher-safe. Stainless steel containers: These meal prep boxes are strong, portable, and effective in maintaining the proper temperature for food like salads, cold foods, almonds, and snacks.

They don't collect odors or stains and are dishwasher-safe. They are great for cold foods and snacks, eco-friendly, and also kid-friendly. Size and capacity: Choose a container with the right capacity based on how much food users will be storing and carrying.

Look for mason jars for meal prep containers with a higher capacity if the consumers intend to consume larger meals.

Material: There are so many options for food prep container materials, including metal, glass, silicone, and plastic.

The brand even lists the benefits of the material on the bottom of their packaging along with guidelines on how to best use.

While we didn't test the brand's claim that they can go straight from the freezer to the oven, they performed well in our freezer to microwave tests by heating the food well and relatively quickly without any noticeable deformations. The clear material of the base and plastic lids also makes them great for freezing and storing , so you can always know what's inside and if they've started to develop freezer burn.

Plus, they come in an assortment of rectangular and circular sizes that nest inside of each other so you're not limited to one and you can save on space. In recent years, we've tested more than food storage containers in the Good Housekeeping Institute. In our most recent test, we tested three different samples of the same container from 21 different brands. On the samples that were freezer-, microwave- and dishwasher-safe, we performed a freezer to microwave test in one of the containers to assess durability and staining.

We also ran each sample through the dishwasher five times to see how they fared. We then tested both samples and a new, control sample for leaking by conducting two different tests: we filled each sample with water and shook it for 15 seconds to see if any lost any water and we also filled each with water and left it upside overnight to see if it leaked.

Our top performers did not show any marks of deformation after moving from the freezer to the microwave and running through the dishwasher five times. They also barely lost a gram of water in our leakproof tests. The top performing food storage containers that were were lightweight, stackable, easy to use and see-through stood out as the best containers for meal prep.

Glass tends to last longer and be less prone to staining, but it can be heavier and even the strongest ones can crack or chip. Plastic is lightweight and often less expensive but stains easily and some people prefer not to microwave food in it.

Stainless steel is another option that's durable and long lasting but can't be microwaved. We tend to use an assortment based on our needs but glass is the most versatile option.

Some can be round but we find them a little trickier to transport. Some also come with dividers for portioning out food. These dividers can feel helpful to some people but limiting to others. If you like variety or to cook in batches, look for a meal prep container set that comes with different size and shape options.

While some of the containers in these type of sets may seem too big or too small to take back and forth with, there will include at least a few suitable options. Lids that press down to close are often thinner and easier to store but don't always offer the best leak-proof assurance.

Other features to consider are whether they're freezer-, dishwasher- and microwave safe. Some glass containers are even oven-safe if you prefer heating or even cooking!

your food that way. The type of meal prep container you use is a matter of preference. Some people may like how lightweight plastic is while others may prefer glass that feels more durable. Plastic tends to stain but glass can break. Both can usually be microwaved but glass is often more heat-resistant.

Glass also tends to cost more but it's less disposable. Our recommendation is to use the one that makes the most sense for you and your family. We try to stick to containers that have good seals, are made of a quality plastic, glass or stainless steel, will last long and can be used in a variety of ways from the freezer to the microwave.

We also prefer meal prep containers that are dishwasher-safe to make cleanup easier. The ability to stack is important to us as is having containers that are clear or transparent so we can easily keep an eye on what food we have in our fridge.
