The best method for assessing nutrient availability in your garden is to do a soil test. The analysis will also come with a basic interpretation of results and provide recommendations for fertilizing. There are many options for fertilizers and sometimes the choices may seem overwhelming.

The most important thing to remember is that plants take up nutrients in the form of ions, and the source of those ions is not a factor in plant nutrition. The fertilizer you choose should be based primarily on soil test results and plant needs, both in terms of nutrients and speed of delivery.

All commercially available fertilizers have what is called a guaranteed analysis , meaning the percent of each major nutrient, by weight, in the fertilizer must be listed on the package as N-P-K. For example, 10 pounds of tomato food fertilizer contains 1.

Many garden fertilizers contain additional nutrients. Inorganic fertilizers generally list all nutrients on the label, organic fertilizers often contain a wide array of plant nutrients and may not list them all. If you cannot find a fertilizer with the exact N-P-K ratio that is recommended by your soil test report, you should select a product with a ratio that most closely matches.

Note that a fertilizer has a ratio of nutrients that is , meaning that for every 1 pound of N, there are 2 pounds of P 2 O 5 and 1 pound of K 2 O. Regardless of which fertilizers you choose, consider adding additional organic materials to support overall soil health.

Carbon-based materials such as organic fertilizers, compost, grass clippings or cover crops provide a range of benefits to both plants and soil. Diagnosing nutrient deficiencies or excesses in fruits and vegetables is challenging.

Do not over-lime. Apply lime according to the results of a soil test. Excess lime is likely to result in iron chlorosis in plants. Lowering Soil pH If soil pH is higher than 7. This generally is not practical for large areas due to the cost, but it may be feasible on small garden plots or when a high value crop requires a low soil pH.

Elemental sulfur can be used to lower soil pH. Elemental sulfur is available for purchase and is most commonly used. Table II shows the amount of sulfur to add, depending on the texture and pH of the soil.

Irrigation water can be high in calcium carbonate and will neutralize the effect of the sulfur over time.

Problem sections or areas where you plan to grow specialty plants, such as blueberries , warrant separate final samples of their own. Lawn cores should extend 4 to 6 inches deep, excluding thatch. Cores from ornamental or vegetable gardens should reach 6 to 8 inch depths.

Make sure to remove the grass blades, stems, thatch and other organic matter from the core. Trees and shrubs feed heavily where the outermost canopies drip rain and dew to the ground, so take soil cores there.

Work when soil is dry enough to crumble easily in your hand, so soil cores mix uniformly for your final soil sample. A soil probe or core sampler designed for sampling soil is easy to use; simply insert it into soil and retrieve your core.

A simple garden spade or trowel works, too. Well-cleaned stainless steel is ideal. Avoid using a brass, bronze or galvanized utensil, as the copper or zinc can contaminate results.

Use a clean plastic or stainless bucket for mixing soil cores. So be specific, and don't skimp. Nitrogen is a mobile nutrient in soil and can be applied when needed by the plants. Nitrogen can be applied to the soil surface and incorporated with water or tilled into the soil. High concentrations of nitrogen fertilizer should not be placed in contact with seeds or growing plants because injury is likely.

Place fertilizer at least two inches away from the stem and scattered across the soil surface. Be careful not to apply too much nitrogen. Nitrogen can promote excessive vegetative growth and delay vegetable fruit production. Nitrogen and phosphorus applied at rates exceeding the recommended rates can be harmful to the environment.

Incorporation of materials with high amounts of carbon in relation to nitrogen, such as wood-based mulches and tree leaves, can result in nitrogen deficiencies in vegetable crops.

An additional 0. Incorporation of grass clippings and manures does not require additional nitrogen due to their higher nitrogen content. Phosphorus Phosphorus deficiencies in plants can develop in some Nebraska soils and are best identified with a soil test.

The suggested potassium rate, based on soil test, is given in Table VI. Potassium should be applied prior to tillage. Sulfur deficiency can occur on very sandy, low organic matter soils, particularly in north central Nebraska.

A few vegetables, such as the cole crops cabbage, broccoli, etc. The application of organic materials, such as manure, will help correct the problem. Many fertilizers include small amounts of sulfur, which will be indicated on the fertilizer analysis found on the package label.
